Joan Austin
Distinguished Service Award

Established to recognize individuals who have made long‑term commitments of time and energy to NYSTAA. Honorees demonstrate significant and lasting contributions to the organization and advocacy for transfer issues.

Recipients may have served as board members, officers, active committee members, statewide advocates for transfer, conference presenters, professional leaders, and role models for new transfer professionals.

Renamed in May 2012 in honor of Joan Austin (d. Dec 2, 2011), whose commitment to NYSTAA and transfer students left an enduring legacy.

Eligibility: Members with more than three years of NYSTAA involvement

New Professional Award

Recognizes the enthusiasm, service, and early contributions of new NYSTAA members. This award promotes continued engagement and leadership within the Association.

Eligibility: Members with fewer than three years of NYSTAA involvement

Emeritus Award

Honors NYSTAA members who have retired or transitioned to roles outside of transfer, in recognition of significant, long‑term contributions to the Association and the profession.

Eligibility: Retired members or professionals beyond transfer roles

Roger Sullivan
Excellence in Transfer Services Award

Added in 2019 to honor outstanding work supporting transfer students within New York State. Recognizes individuals or institutional teams who advance student achievement through innovative programs and/or dedicated advocacy and service.

Renamed in May 2023 in honor of Roger Sullivan (d. Jan 4, 2019), a NYSTAA founding member, first President‑Elect and inaugural Conference Chair (1993–1994). Roger served SUNY students for 40+ years and is remembered for his humor and service.

Eligibility: Individual or institutional NYSTAA members
